You're probably wondering how on earth I reached the conclusion that 'Spoonie on Wheels' was the best blog name, right?
A 'spoonie' is a person who lives with chronic pain and use Spoon Theory to describe their pain/energy levels.
Christine Miserandio's Spoon Theory (2003), for those who've never encountered it, is a metaphor. It's a way of explaining how you have to manage your energy and pain levels. Your energy levels are represented by "spoons".
Non-disabled or 'healthy' people have an entire overflowing kitchen drawer full of them. People like me start the day with a handful.
Let's put this into perspective.
I wake up in the morning with six spoons, each of these spoons represents the energy an activity willl take. I have to take a shower and dress, that's one spoon gone. I go downstairs and do some chores, depending on my pain that day, those chores could be anywhere from two spoons to four depending on my pain levels. If we go off a 'bad day', that gives me one spoon to last me until bed.
What if I have plans?
Well, that's easily several spoons. I can borrow from tomorrow's, but that'll leave me with even less energy, starting a vicious cycle.
Spoon theory is not only about explaining the lived reality of chronic pain and fluctuating energy levels, but serves as a reminder to slow down and conserve those spoons.
As for wheels, I typically use a walking frame, but I've been known to use mobility scooters and wheelchairs on occasion.
So...that's me, Spoonie on Wheels.
